The West End Community Centre Association enhances the quality of life of the residents and visitors of the West End and Coal Harbour communities by providing recreational, educational and social activities and services. The West End & Coal Harbour Community Centres are looking for energetic, enthusiastic and responsible individuals to plan, lead and implement our Summer Day Camp programs for children ages 6 to 13 years.
Qualifications:
- Experience working in a day camp or related setting as a leader or volunteer
- Experience working with neurodiverse children and/or children with autism
- Strong knowledge of age-appropriate activities & out trips for children ages 6 to 13 years
- String knowledge of working with children with variety of needs and capabilities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated leadership & problem solving skills
- Demonstrated administrative skills in program planning, word processing and experience in incident reporting
- Experience supporting staff and volunteers
- Knowledge of languages other than English is an asset
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Providing direct leadership, supervision and instruction to Day Camp participants
- Implement behavior support activities and plans while providing direct support to individuals with behavioural challenges, make adjustments to behaviour support strategies with support from the team
- Provide training and support to staff, caregivers, and family members on behavior management techniques and addressing challenges of participants
- Providing a safe, educational, and engaging environment
- Working cooperatively with and being a positive role model to fellow staff and volunteers
- Preparing and submitting feedback for the Day Camps & providing recommendations for future programs
- Liaising & working with Recreation Staff at the West End & Coal Harbour Community Centres to ensure the efficient operation of Day Camp programs
- Collecting information for medical & waiver forms from participants each week, accurately records and tracks progress data in child’s program binder; as well as maintains and organizes binder
- Have respectful interactions with and maintain professional boundaries with families
- Collecting data, monitoring, recording and reviewing client progress with team members
- Maintaining an organized environment for intervention, including room organization. Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of all interventions and progress notes.
- Attending and participating in regularly scheduled team meetings
Conditions of employment:
- Successful Police Records clearance
- Current First Aid/CPR level C certification or willingness to obtain prior to the first day of the program
- Current and valid Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) training, or willingness to obtain
- Minimum of six months related part-time experience in recreation (preferably in a camp setting) with an emphasis on working with people with disabilities within the past three years
- Currently the association’s vaccination policy is suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time. However, should circumstances change and the City of Vancouver deem it necessary to re-
introduce such policy, candidates may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible for employment - As conditions of a position covered by the Canada Summer Jobs grant, the successful applicant must be between the ages of 16 and 30 years. As well must be available to work the full duration of the dates stated below.
- Preference will be given to those who are choosing a career in recreation, education, psychology, social services or social sciences
Terms of employment:
*positions, rate of pay, total hours, and start date dependent on funding from the Canada Summer Jobs Grant
- Behaviour Support Leader: June 15 – August 28th, 2026
- 30 to 40 hours per week
- $25.00 per hour plus 4% in lieu of vacation pay and 4% in lieu of statutory holiday pay
